PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Officials say militants have fired three rockets at an airport in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, killing two people and wounding 30 others.
Senior government official Mian Iftikhar Hussain says a gunbattle broke out between security forces and militants out after the rocket attack Saturday night and is still ongoing. Hussain is the information minister in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where Peshawar is the capital.
Local hospital official Umar Ayub says two people were killed and 30 wounded in the attack, including women and children. Four of the wounded are in critical condition.
Peshawar is located on the edge of Pakistan's tribal region, the major sanctuary for al-Qaida and Taliban militants. The city has been attacked repeatedly in the past few years, but an attack on the airport is rare.
